A visit to Newfoundland, St-Johns (Feb 10-12 2015)

Decided to get last minute tickets to Newfoundland to visit my cousins. They moved to St-Johns in October and never looked back.

Before the flight, I was texting with a Newfie friend that told me to get "screeched". He didn't want to tell me what it was so I asked my seat neighbour and it sounded gross... Drinking the local rum and kissing a dead cod.

Cousin came to pick me up and we cabbed together - only 20$!!! That's pretty cheap for a cab ride from the airport to midtown.

Her house is a typical Newfie shack. Really nice with 3 bedrooms and 1bath. She's in the student district near the cemetery. I hoped they received the Newfie's hospitality but maybe St-Johns is over saturated with new comers that have no respect for the land and culture...

When we woke up, we decided to get ready and walk to the harbour and Georges street. It took us 20 minutes and it reminded me of San Francisco with the hills and colourful townhouses. Even though it was covered in snow, I could see why the Newfoundlanders misses home when they work in Alberta. It is such a beautiful land. It also reminded me of New Zealand.

Georges street is like Crescent street in Montreal, not very interesting, but the harbour is quite something and seen the refinery tank on top of the hill was also something. I wonder why they decided to put tanks there because if it leaks, it will leak down the hill...

For supper, we went to a sushi place which was owned by Chinese people and a white tall blond girl was our waitress. She was not the best... The food was very good and i was craving ramen so I ordered and ate it all. Afterwards we went to the museum The Rooms where the history of Newfounland was presented. They were very ressourceful people by over fishing the cod for the English and by sealing because of the winter. I still don't understand how people survive there if there are no jobs.

The next day, there was a big snow storm so it was very hard to get out of the house. I was worried that I was going to be stuck here and will miss my flight to Russia. Cousin decided to play in the snow but the toddler did not cooperate outside because the wind was very strong and the snow could cut our faces. It was 58 kph and -10 without windchill.
My cousin and I decided to shovel the front and the back of the house. After only a few minutes, the snow would cover the front porch and deck. Because of the temperature and the ugly weather, we decided to stay inside and drink the beer that we bought yesterday night after the visit to the museum.

The next morning, she woke up early to shovel the snow from the vehicle and we went on with our day to the Signal road where we can see the St-John's harbour and the downtown district. The view was spectacular and it was very cold due to the wind.

Afterwards, we went to the airport and I took off to Halifax. From there, flights were delayed due to the snow storm and I was bumped into an earlier flight directly to Montreal.

In Montreal, my best friend came to pick me up and I started packing for Russia.
